““Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold that they refine. “But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?”
Job 28:1, 12 ESV
There are five hundred and sixty-two miles between my roots.
All my father’s side of me are from Wausau, Florida. Sand hills, scrub oaks, and pine trees. My mother’s side of me is from Harlan County, Kentucky. Rugged mountains and coal mines. My grandfather, my great grandfather, and probably farther back than that were coal miners. The coal companies brought jobs to an extremely impoverished part of the country; however, it was very hard and dangerous work.
Though I’ve never mined for coal, I’ve always been a miner of sorts. I do not read books necessarily because I enjoy reading - I enjoy mining information, learning, and finding mentors worth mining. I have gleaned so many treasures from good books. When I began to study the Bible thirty plus years ago I found a vein of something more valuable than silver, gold, or any other precious mineral. I found Christ!
I can’t even begin to describe the treasures I’ve mined from the Bible. What I have found in God’s Word is ancient wisdom for our modern world. This book is alive. The same verse on a different day can speak to a new circumstance or situation in your life. It’s absolutely a mine of miraculous proportions! The answer to all my problems, your problems, and the world’s problems can be mined from the Bible.
The greatest mentors are found in the Bible. People such as Abraham, Joseph, David, Peter, Paul, and the ultimate mentor, Jesus Christ.
I challenge you to mine for more. Refuse to settle for what’s on the surface of your Bible, dig deeper. Try taking one book of the Bible, or one character in the Bible, and mine out the wisdom and revelation God has waiting just for you. Get a Fire Bible, something to take notes on, and get to work. The life of a miner isn’t easy work, but I can promise you, it will be worth it!
