"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 (KJV)
We talked in a prior post about being in awe of God’s capacity of knowledge. Now I want to talk about God’s capacity to give. I know the text we chose is arguably the most used and widely known scripture in the Bible, yet I couldn’t find one that said more about God’s capacity to give. It says it all about the Awe of God.
Humans have four basic needs to survive - air, water, food, and shelter. Just stop for a few seconds and think about that. Now reflect on your life. God has given us those essentials required to survive. He could have stopped there and still have been a very gracious and giving God, but He didn’t.
God isn’t just a giver; He is an extravagant giver. When I look around at my world and those in my world, and as I compare our lives with basic survival needs, I’m in absolute awe of God’s capacity and generosity! He has given most of us more than we could ever need, not to mention the many wants with which He has blessed us. While pondering this post, I took an inventory of our life. I could not believe the blessings God has provided in our family beyond the fundamental needs of life. Most of what He has provided wasn’t an answer to prayer, we never asked God for them, but simply evidence of the generosity of a loving and caring Father.
Many years ago, when we started out in ministry, dear saints Bro. and Sis. Clestus Cook taught us the principle of “Handfuls on Purpose.” This comes from Ruth 2:16 and illustrates the principle that God gives merely because He’s a giver. We have experienced this through the years more times than we can count.
Now before you take account of God’s capacity to give in your life, make sure you consider the most important things, like family, health, and most of all, God’s mercy and grace that has followed you all your life. I pray that Salvation is among your many blessings. If not, I pray it will be soon, because this alone is the greatest gift of all the generous things God has done. He gave His only Son to be brutally crucified for our sins. That is a God with the capacity to be an extravagant giver.
Remember: air, water, food, and shelter. I believe if you take inventory of what you have beyond the basics, plus salvation and what He has in store for you in eternity, I’m sure you will agree HE IS AN AWESOME GOD! Our family isn’t wealthy by the world’s standards, but I still stand in awe of my God’s capacity to give!
