Acts 21:16

There went with us also certain of the disciples of Caesarea and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.

While studying the book of Acts this past year, I came across this verse. It was one of those verses that seemed relatively insignificant. But then, that phrase “old disciple” arrested my attention.

After researching it, I discovered the text wasn’t referring just to Mnason’s age, but that he was one of the early followers of Jesus, which would also mean he was an older man. I just love this description! He was not referred to as apostle, preacher, or pastor. Just Old Disciple. It made me pause to remember some old disciples I have known in my lifetime as my mind flooded with names and faces. My heart swelled with memories of some of them. What a tremendous blessing to have personally known such godly people, not to mention live up close to them.

These people were spiritual giants in my life. Some were calm and quiet, others were gregarious. Some were preachers and teachers. Some were known to be wise; others were known to be prayer warriors. Some were very demonstrative in their worship, others more reserved. Some were serious by nature while others had a profound sense of humor. But the one thing they all had in common was that they were all Old Disciples.

To be perfectly honest, I didn’t give that title much thought at that time. At this stage of life though, I understand more what being an old disciple means. Here are a few thoughts on Old Disciples:

First, God had graced them with a long life. I love the third verse of Amazing Grace –“Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come. ‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.” If you have lived long enough to be an Old Disciple, you ought to stop and thank God!

Second, they endure many trials, tests, and triumphs to get to where they are. Experienced disciples have so much to share. It may not be obvious, but beneath that warm smile is a warrior that has fought and won some amazing battles. These Old Disciples have also learned what battles aren’t.

Finally, they remained disciples. They had their share of disappointment and discouragement, but they endured. And that says it all. In fact, that’s all that really matters.

I heard Barry C. Black, who is the United States Senate Chaplain, share a story many years ago that impacted my life. An elder minister was asked if he had any fears left in his life. “Yes,” the old disciple said, “I have three. First, that my body will outlive my mind. Second, that I will outlive my mourners. Third, that I will drown in shallow water at the end.”

The latter should be a concern of any Old Disciple. Pray that God gives you the grace not to be careless in your old age. Guard your heart and your words. Finish life as an Old Disciple.
