A Study in the Book of James
”From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?“
James 4:1 KJV
Pam and I agreed many years ago that our home would be a place of peace. Whatever happens on the outside, our home is our peaceful refuge. I am incredibly grateful that Grace (our Church) is also a place of peace. I cannot understand why people would want to live in chaos and drama.
The Book of James states that wars and fighting come from our own selfish desires. Mature disciples are Peacemakers! They do not have to have their own way, they are unselfish, they are considerate of others, and they even put the needs and wants of others ahead of their own.
Mature disciples are quick to give mercy, and slow to pass judgment. The world is filled with judgment, which so often leads to wars and fighting. Racial judgment is running rampant. Dr. Martin Luther King had a dream that his children would not be judged by the color of their skin, but the content of their character. I echo that dream. Whatever nationality you are, whether you live in poverty or privilege, whether you’re black, brown, or white, American or foreign, let every man and woman stand on their own conduct and character.
Could we all agree that keeping the peace is far more important than proving our point? Most of our differences are not worth fighting over. Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9) I would much rather be known as a child of God and a mature disciple of Jesus, than for causing unnecessary strife and conflict.
Romans 12:18 states, “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”
Mature Disciples are peacemakers!
