Job 3:17
There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.
I’m not familiar with anyone who has suffered on the scale Job did. He had everything, and then he lost everything. In Job’s despair, he could not see any way forward. I’ve been in a few low places, but I cannot recall being unable to see forward. Sometimes it was foggy and difficult to see, but I kept easing forward. Even before I put my trust in God there were things I loved (my wife, my son) that kept me pushing forward. Though I have prayed for the rapture to come a few times after becoming a Christian.
Job couldn’t see forward so he turned his attention backward. Back to his birth. Job lamented that he wished he had never been born or had died at birth. We all understand the pain of losing someone we love. But the memories of loving, laughing, crying, and intimate life we shared are worth the pain. We would do it all over again. Job declared in death the wicked would cease from troubling. I can’t imagine a world without the wicked. We are in a fallen world where wickedness abounds. Job goes on to say, the weary shall be at rest. Every human being deals with some level of weariness. It’s part of our fallen nature in a fallen world. Rest from the wicked and weariness is going to be wonderful. As the old songs says, “No more sorrow, no more sickness, no more disease, and no more dying there!”
However, the thought of these things being absent cannot compare to our expectations of what we will experience there. Heaven is more than escaping a fallen earth with fallen people. Heaven is a real place where we will live a real life as God intended life to be lived! There will be no democracy to create unending division; Heaven will be a Theocracy where God Himself will rule and reign.
Our fallen nature will finally be free from any trace of sin, sickness, or sadness. Our minds will never again be depressed, oppressed, angry, or insecure. We will receive a glorified body, and that comes with a glorified brain. There will be no misunderstandings, no awkward moments when we meet someone, and no strained or broken relationships. The inability to control our minds and emotions will be healed and made perfectly whole in an instant. I thought I loved my wife before I got saved. After I got saved it was a new level of love. I can’t imagine the level of love we will share when we get to heaven. It will be the purest love any of us have ever known. Even so come, Lord Jesus!
Wickedness and weariness make me homesick for Heaven. There is no hope for this chaotic world, but we who know Christ have hope beyond this world. Do you remember songs about Heaven? It wouldn’t be a bad idea to dust one or two off, grab a tissue, and sing until heaven fills your soul again. This world is not our home!
